Mental Health Q & A

What are the signs of mental health issues?

Mental illness isn't always obvious, even to yourself. It's quite common to experience a gradual increase in worrying issues until your symptoms grow intrusive or disruptive. So, if you notice any of the following issues, it's better to seek help sooner rather than later.

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Avoiding your friends and family
  • Difficulty keeping up with routine activities, like bathing or cleaning the house
  • Missing work or school, or declining performance at either
  • Persistent feelings of sadness, anger, fear, or hopelessness
  • Visual or auditory hallucinations
  • Thoughts of self-harm or harming other people
  • Repetitive thoughts and memories that you can't control
  • Uncontrolled drug or alcohol use

Some symptoms are more common in certain disorders, while others appear across several disorders. For example, anxiety disorders cause powerful feelings of panic or worry, which are often out of proportion for the trigger. But, you may also sometimes experience these issues when your main problem is depression.

If you're dealing with any kind of mental health issue or simply feel concerned that your mental health could be at risk, it's important to schedule an evaluation with the compassionate team at Wholehealth PLLC.

What causes mental health issues?

In most cases, several factors come together to influence your mental health. Your genetics, individual brain chemistry, personal history, environmental factors, bodywide health, relationships, and many other factors can play a role in depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other mental illnesses.

Regardless of the underlying causes of your mental health challenges, the Wholehealth PLLC team can provide the expert guidance and compassionate mental health support you need.

What happens during mental health treatment?

The initial step in treatment is a psychiatric evaluation with Dr. Xu. Your evaluation includes a full analysis of your medical history, overall health, lifestyle, and current mental health challenges. You'll take a variety of diagnostic tests to help Dr. Xu and the team determine what treatment plan suits your needs the best.

Treatment usually consists of:

Talk therapy

The Wholehealth PLLC team may use several different therapeutic approaches during your individual therapy sessions. They're experts in helping you better understand your feelings and thoughts while giving you coping mechanisms and teaching healthy thought patterns.

There are many options for prescription medications to reduce intrusive symptoms. Antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, or other condition-specific drugs can work together with psychotherapy and other approaches to help you feel better.

Support groups

Wholehealth PLLC offers community support groups where you can meet others who share your struggles. This kind of support can be an excellent adjunct to your individual therapy sessions.

Along with these options, your Wholehealth PLLC therapist may recommend transcranial magnetic stimulation or other complementary therapies like aromatherapy, supplements, and meditation to help you get the most from your treatment.
